Virginia SB 51 was signed into law, limiting the authority of counties to require permits for farmers to engage in farm sales and activity.
Farmers, merchants and citizens of Fauquier County should express their gratitude to Martha Boneta, the tireless organic farmer with some 200 rescued farm animals who took on the overbearing Lords of Fauquier County.
The county’s dishonest lobbying against her personally and her cause was financed by the taxpayers of Fauquier. Boneta, on the other hand, built an army of grassroots supporters relying on the goodness of her cause, the sincerity of her beliefs, and the promise that freedom helps create prosperity for more people than any government program.
Boneta endured intimidation and false witness against her, yet she remained cheerful.
Her two-year fight continues in court. We still need a remedies law so that lawbreaking bureaucrats face consequences for their willfull bad acts. And, we still need a fix to the Virginia Code that allows local government to violate due process rights of property owners.
But this was a victory against government’s abusing zoning power to trespass on our property rights. And, it exposed how local government can be just as ugly as any larger state or federal bureaucracy.
In step nameless sore losers, a tiny but truly distasteful element or strain of busybodies in Fauquier County, who are rumored to have been circulating a petition — not to fire zoning administrator Kim Johnson who cited Martha for having a birthday party; not to bounce corrupt county supervisors — but to have Martha’s farm shut down.
We say, folks, get a life.
These people aren’t merely sore losers. They are the remnants of the time when localities could target individuals for abusive and discriminatory treatment by trespassing on their property rights. They are a handful of despots who use local government to violate other people’s rights.
They and their abettors in county government are the reason why the majority of us who support local government also know that local government can be used for the wrong and even unlawful ends. They are the reason why SB 51 passed.
Meanwhile, Martha Boneta is being celebrated as a hero across the Commonwealth and even across the country. The sore losers look even more petty, insignificant and mean-spirited.
Virginia Right created this music video celebrating Martha’s victory. Listen and enjoy.
